Here are top tips for a healthy heart.

Our hearts really are an amazing piece of kit! They constantly work hard to keep us alive & kicking! However, we don’t always do a very good job at looking after it.

According to the World Health Organisation, cardiovascular heart disease, heart attack & strokes are the leading cause of death worldwide, and in 75% of all cases it’s our lifestyle and diet choices that are to blame.

Making a few small changes can make all the difference in looking after your heart, cut down on salty junk foods, processed meats & saturated fats and load up with nutrient rich vegetables, fruits & wholegrains, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Fill up on fish…
Fish is packed full of heart boosting omega 3 oils, which have been shown to lower triglycerides, helping to prevent cardiovascular disease.

Ditch the salt…
Most of us have far too much salt in our diets, salt can raise your blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease. By ditching processed and ready made dinners we are already on the right track to reducing our intake, it is always so much better cooking from scratch as you know exactly what is going into your food that way.

Opt for oats…
Porridge really is the best way to start your day, oats contain a soluble fibre called beta glucan than has been found to lower cholesterol levels. Oats are also rich in the mineral magnesium, which relaxes blood vessels supporting the heart muscle.

Drink up…
Staying hydrated is a top priority, remember the heart is a muscle, and to function properly muscles needs to stay hydrated, so try and aim for a least 2 litres a day of water.
